Mail Merge
Yesterday our teacher taught us about the cool new modual on Microsoft Word call Mail merge. Mail merge allows you to make Letters, Envolopes, Lables, or E-mails with the same body content but with different names and things that the person has done, so many businesses have a content with a large adress book and then uses mail merge and put int hte names of all the adresses into the letter, there will only be one copy with names on it but when you print it there will be 100's of copies with different names int them. This applies for envolopes aswell.
Mail Merge 2003:
Tools, Letters and Mialings, Mail Merge.
Mail Merge 2007:
Mailings, Start Mailing Merge, Start Mailing Merge
Once entered you can choose 4 things, Letters, Envolopes, Lables, or E-mails. Choose which one you want. You can make any one of the four have the same content but have different adresses and names on it which is pretty cool and you wont have to make 1000 letters for 1000 people you just make one body apply names and print them all out wich is pretty cool.
Once you chosen one of them it will give you 2-3 options to start you option off with. The options include the following:
-Use current document to start item with
-Choosing the template
-Using an already existing document
-Change document Layout
Lables and envolopes do not have Choosing templates and Using files becuase the thing they use to start first doesn't have templates and second needs a specific style document to start the design of the envolope so they do not have the 2, while Letters and E-mails do not ahve change document layout because they do not need a special layout to be made.
After choosing the way you want to start the letter, or any other letter as, you have to make the infromation to put on the letter like the persons name, adresses, and things that are indicated on a letter. There are three options for this aswell.
-Use existing list, so in other words you are listing an adress, name and things like that is save on your computer.
- Use adresses on Window Outlook
- Type new adress list.
If you choose type new list then type in the new adresses. When you are don the new list you can save it, but if you use the other 2 you already have one that is made so you don't have to do this step.
You then write the letter you will have to add the adress, names, subjects and other things that include information about the person you are writing the letter to, but don't type it add it throught the dock at the side bececause it will put every record that you have in that field in a letter so if you have 100 records and you choose the name and insert it there will be 100 letters with 100 of that different field in each of these letters.
The next step will be editing your letter so the fields will make sense together with the body of the letter.
Finally you will have to print it.
Field: A certain catagory of infromation like names, adresses, and others.
Record: Is a whole set of fields or infromation, like a record of a teacher which has their name ( a field) and other catagories of information

The Anonymous
A first day after we came back from the weekend we continued to talk about the Scientology problem. We talked about how dangerous could the Internet be. We also listened to the threat video that the hacking group Anonymous sent to the church of the Scientology. We also learned that Anonymous did many horrible things like ruin children's life by hacking into their computers and stealing information from there. We also discussed about how does the Hackers feel, some people mentioned that they were people with no life that lived under their parents basements, and some people consider this as fact, and our teacher told us that hackers are usually people who are unsatisfied with their life and get their pleasure by causing other peoples misery. We also learned that people who are hackers are not really smart. Not all hackers know how to use coding, some may just use hacking programs that other people wrote to hack, which doesn't make them smart, they just use programs to do the work for them. We also learned that downloading cracked software and other things like this may have bots in them. With these bots the hackers are able to activate them and use these bots to control your computer to do things for them like send them your personal information, a persons credit card number, and many more. Anonymous destroyed the Church of Scientology's server by have millions of computers go onto the same place at the same time which caused the server to crash, and the reason so many computers went on the server is because they activated the bots they planted on software that was cracked and whoever had that had a bot so the bot would make the computer go into the server, and this happened to millions of computers so that is why the website crashed. Anonymous currently has 3 videos and you can find them on Youtube.

Presentations Continues
Yesterday we continued our presentations. After these presentations we were taught 2 things, One was on Microsoft word and one was on ethics.
Our teacher taught us 2 features for Microsoft word. One was the header and footer features. Header and footers is a good addtion to you project, it makes it look alot more professional, when you add headers and footers it adds it to every pagel, and when you add words to these header and footers it is added to every page aswell and it numbers it automaticall, this is very useful, and it looks very professional and pleasing to the eye, this is a good way to spice up your project or paper.
Footers and Headers:
2007: It is very different from 2003, you can only insert them one by one or seperately which consumes more time but you can choose alternate designs for the headers and footers which spieces up the project even more.
Insert, Footer and Header, Choose either Footer or Header
The next thing we learned was how to make our own tool bar. It is much like the quick acess tool bar for 2007, but you have to make the bar itself first, name it than put it on all the moduals, but in 2007 it already gives you the most basic moduals, but this is a cool thing for 2003 because you can acess the moduals you use the most without having to search around for it wich is alot better.
To Acess it you: ?? filled in later
The next lesson we learned was on ethics. Tom Cruse made a video only for the Church of Scientology. Someone on the hand of this video and posted it onto Youtube. Sadly the Church of Scientology Sued Youtube and anything with that video. A hacking group called Anonomus, was angered by this and told everyone what they will do to the church of scientology, they all invoded into the church of Scientology website and destroyed it, all the infromation like the Church of Scientology's advanced handbook for the highclassed leaders only was released to the bublic on the internet. There are many movies about this on youtube so it is pretty cool.

Microsoft Word Presentation
Today we are supposed to present 1 topic of our choice on Microsoft word. I wanted to do Quick Acess tool bars, but I was only able to find it on Microsoft Office 2007 so I decided to do "Turn Table to Text, and Text to Table." To acess it go to:
2003:
Highlight Text,Tables, Convert, Choose one (Text to Table or Table to Text)
2007:
Create table, Layout, Convert to text
For 2007 I was only able to find Convert Table to Text.
I was able to present today but not everyone, I am sure the rest of the people will present tommarow.
I also learned many other things like what was a macro.
Macro: a program that you could write to do continuous actions so you don't have to do everything like center every piece of text continuously so you dont have to center it yourselves.
Drop Cap: This makes a giant letter in front wich you see in many books, this gives a cool looking design for the first letter that makes it look like a novel.

10 Things I didn't know about Microsoft.
The folowing are 10 things that I didn't know about Microsoft Word, I didn't have much time to explore Microsoft word in the past so I think this is a good chance for me to get to know this stuff and also I am using Microsoft Office 2007 so it is different for Microsoft 2003 :
1. Insert Citations: References, Citations and Bibliography, Insert Citation, Choose the type of citation (Book, Website, etc.,)
I learned of the Insert Citations modual. This Modual allows you to cite things without using Citation Maching which is pretty cool, know this measn I can be a little bit lazyer and just make the Cite in Microsoft word for almost anything without going to Citation machine. In the past I never look at references so I didn't know of this useful feature of Microsoft Word
2. The Quick Access Tool Bar: It is beside the file button, to add to it either go right click onto on of the moduals and click customize quick access tool bar or just right click the moduals you want on the and click add to tool bar and all the tools that you will need will be there.
I find this modual pretty helpful to me that is because I dont have to skip throught so many moduals to find the ones I actually need, and it can help me do my work faste.r
3. Header and Footer: Go to Insert, Header and Footers, choose header or footer, and choose out of already made ones.
I found this modual pretty cool becuase it could spice up your work and make it seem a little neater and it will look better all around so it seems more professional.
4. Table to Text: Click on Table, Go to Layout, Data and Table's data into text. You can choose the type of text you want your text to be.
I dealt with times where you have a data in a table but since it is too long to put in a table you want it to be in text so you would either retype it or copy, delete table, and paste it back, this consumes alot of time while this just turns it back to good old normal writing, which is more efficient.
5. Envolopes: Mailing, Envoles, type in adress and size, Print.
This is also a very cool modual that i was only able to find on Microsoft Office 2007 for some reason, I was able to create an envolope to mail letters to, with this my envolope will look more professional with the type adress and all without the pen marks and if I don't have an envolope i could just print one out. This is a quite cool modual.
6. Edit Data: Create Chart, Select chart, Design, Data, Edit data, Change what is needed.
This was something that suprised me. When I made a chart, I noticed that there was no data screen and then excel popls up with a data table telling me what i need to put for where. This is very helpful and makes it easier to rearange data. This is one of my favourite applications becuase I get to use 2 programs to make my life easier.
7. Automatic Table of Contents: References, Table of contents, choose the the type of table of contents, that was already created.
Did you ever had a time where you made a project but forgot to make a table of contents and when making it you have to make the dots one by one which makes you regret having to have to make one. With this modual you can make the table of contents last, you dont have to make dots you just have to put in page number and Name of page and that it.
8. Signature line: Insert, Text, Signature line
I always wondererd where they got the signature lines for some of the business documents for the Boss or business men to sight, with this I can actually make a document that sort of looks professional without hav e to use paint and going through the trouble.
9. Table Maker: Insert, Tables, Tables, Quick tables, choose one of them
You can make many things that you cannot create before like callenders and other tables with specail desight and it looks better than it does before.
10. Compare and Contrast: Review, Compare, Compare, Choose 2 Documents
This allows you to choose 2 documents to compare and you can compare them side by side to see how much better is on over another, this helps when you are trying to make something look creative.

Microsoft Word History
Today out teacher talked about microsoft word. We learned many things today even a small history lesson. Microsoft Word is a word processor. In the olden day people had to hand write everything. If someone made a novel and someone else wanted to coppy it they would usually give it to a group of people who would rewrite every novel, so there would be coppies of it and this was quite time consuming. Then in the end of the 1770's to the early 1800's the typewrite came to be making writing more efficient. At that time typewriters was considered to be a very low class item and whoever used a type writer was a bumb, and the high class people would hand write their writing or ask someone to write it for them. but in the early 1900's typewrites became popular becuase they were faster than most hand writing and more efficeint. Then in the 1970's came the computer. At that time the monitors only had green phospher dots so there was only green colours on a black background. To center font they had to type in a code and they cannot see what will they get, they had to visualize it by the code, which was annoying, but then in 1990's came thw WYSIWYG which stand for What You See Is What You Get, and that is exactly as the title said. Word porcessing programs came out and you can actually see what your product will look like even before you print it and this was highly efficeint. Microsoft is the most popularily used word processing programs. In the 21's century Microsoft bought all the companies with small features and fused all these features into microsoft word, and it si not very popular. After talking about this we got an assighnment to find 10 things we don't know and post it on the blog, it is on the next post.
The Portfollio
A few days ago, we were supposed to hand in our portfolios. The portfolio was a website like a resume telling people what did we do in the BTT course and giving samples of work to them. We were lucky we got that class to do some final touches for that portfolio. I added a few things and I was able to put a background onto the webpage. Since I didn't know how to put on the background until someone taught me in class it sort of looked wierd because my website was composed of mainly tables and 7 pages. I would say it looked horible with the tables but I had to hand it in before i was able to fix the table problem, so I couldn't fix it. There wasn't many people who handed in their portfolios so it was sort of shocking. Anyways I hope i don't do too bad on my portfolio.

The DreamWeaver MX Test
Today we got a test on Dreamweaver MX, this time it wasn't a surprise for any of us because we were warned the day before by our teacher. The test had, how do you start a website, how do you hyperlink test, html codes and applying it to a statement, telling people why is it important to have everything you used in one folder, what is the hexadecimal for colour, two reasons why using crazy fonts are not good, turning number to hex and hex back, and the hardest naming the things circled and defining them. The defining part was easy but the naming part was hard because I didn't study the names of the modules. This test was pretty sample and it was pretty easy. After the test we had time to finish off our portfolios.
Dreamweaver MX Info
Yesterday our teacher taught us more about hte amazing Dreamweaver mx. He taught how to insert a table.
Insert Tables:
Insert, Table, Chose amount of Rows or Columns
Crtl, Alt, T, Choose amount of Rows or Columns
Insert, Common, Insert table, Choose amount of Rows or Columns
Then our teacher taught us how that not all the fonts that we can use in everyones computer because not everyone has the same font as you do, they may not have the font you are using and in the end they will not be able to read the text. If you still want to use other font the teacher taught us another way to insert the text so everyone with a computer could read it, make it into a flash image, since it is a image it is no longer a text om a wierd font so we just inert these.
Inserting Flash Text:
Insert, Interactive images, flash text, type in the text that you want and fill in the sheet.
The teacher asked us if we know how to make the menu thing all arrayed, and he taught use how to make those buttons aswell:
Inserting Flash Buttons:
Insert, Interactive images, Interactive button, Choose the settings of the button.
The teacher said that many sites use a different layout to make their website but the easiest one should be useing tables to layout everything you want. I also experimenting with some other muttons in the interactive button sections like the navigation bar, you only can insert one but it is very useful. The Rollover image is also pretty cool.
Navigation bar:
Insert, Interactive images, Navigation Bar, Choose the settings.
Rollover image:
Insert, Interactive images, Rollover images, choose the settings.
Both of these interactive buttons allow you to make some interactive buttons of your own which makes your website more unique in many ways. This is what we learned at yesterdays class but we had alot of time to work on our portfolio project that class aswell.

Computer Ethics
Yesterday we had our second class on ethics because the computers wont work. We were talking about downloading and how it defies ethics and how it is illegal. We started off by talking about the olden days when cassette tapes were there instead of Cd's. At that time you can buy a original cassette tape and listen to it, but whenever you buy a blank cassette tape you will have to pay a extra tax to the record companies because they assumed that people will use the tape to record their songs. Since whenever you listen or copy the tape the quality of the songs will get worse and sooner or later the people will buy their own because it gets worse every time you play it and copy it. When Cd's came out, record companies started to panic because Cd's use light to read the 0's and 1's on the disk and each time it is cop pied the quality stayed the same. People could put these songs on their computer to make a backup with their Cd's in case it breaks. The songs would take up around 10-90 MB of space and some people would share songs and they would get each others modem id and then share files or download it and to download 10-90 MB which is the amount on a CD, will take weeks so not many people did that. Two inversions changed this from happening MP3 and Napster. MP3 was a program that was thought by some university students and it was able to compress songs and take out things you wouldn't really hear so the file is small, it could compress a CD of song from 90 MB to 9 MB. With this people could share and download each others songs in weeks, the record alliance sued MP3 but it didn't work. From the Invention of MP3 came Napter. It is a server that downloads music from computers that has the music that was typed in in the search bar and Napster would download the data and transfer it to the computer searching, because of this the record companies made less money so the Record alliance sewed Napster and the Record alliance won. Since Napster was sewed for this other companies learned from that mistake and instead of being a middle person to transfer the music from one persons computer to their computer to the person searching it's computer, to just downloading strait from each other. With this if more people were downloading the same music, they could share the bits and peaces that some people have that others don't have to download faster. Since the companies physically touch the music they just leaded the person to it so they wont get sued the responsibilities will fall on the person downloading it. In the present day depending on how much music you download in a certain amount of time you can get fined or sued by the record companies but mainly in the US, in Canada there is no such law, but this law is coming close to becoming true. When you buy music you only bought the right to listen or watch the music or music video, the music is not yours so it is illegal to give it to someone else. Lucky for us downloading is not illegal but uploading is. The record company finds out how much you download because they walk up to Internet providers and tell them that to give them the customers IP address so they can track how much people is downloading and when these laws are applied they will watch you closely for around a month to see how much music you download and then they may sue you for amount of money or you could settle for a smaller amount. After talking about downloading and what does it do to the record companies, we started to discuss how could we make downloading more beneficial to companies, we thought up donate the amount you want depending if you like the product or not, so the people making it still can make a profit and if they could make a profit it will benefit you because if they do not make profit they will not produce songs, and since they don't produce songs you wont have anything to listen, so donating what you feel fits is better. This was yesterdays class, talk about download ethics, this is because the computers didn't work.

More on Dreamweaver and HTML
Today our teacher taught us about using Dreamweaver MX and more one HTML codes. He told us that a site is actually a folder with all the sites, and a domain is the web address that locates this folder. Since a computer could only read code, when you type in a domain it searches its dictionary to find the website in a code. The computer reads this code and and gets the data fro the site that searches for the computer ip and brings the information to you. Computer ip is like your computer address so the Internet can locate your computer. So the Internet decodes the domain name into a code that the computer can read than it send the information gotten from the code to your computer address, that is how the Internet works. Than our teacher opened up dreamweaver mx and showed us how to make a website. We first have to make a website folder so we make a name for the website or website folder, click no on server technology and continue to not use many for the things, than we will have the site folder. Than we start to design and add to the blank website. We first give the site a title, it is what you see on blue bar on the top where the close button is on. After we insert text and change different things on the website by using properties. The teacher also went over the importance of naming your main page to be index because when you type in a web domain the computer finds the page called index or it will show a list of all the pages. So make you main page the index and you will be fine. So you save the site as index. Than you can make a new page and then you can save it as something else and you can make a title for it and this continues. To hyperlink a object or text, in the properties tool bar there is a bulseye button, click on it and a arrow will appear move the mouse to the file panel on the port and it will automatically maximize and then you just point the arrow towards the page you want to hyperlink the thing to.
Using the Properties tool bar in Dreamweaver Mx may be a lot easier because it inserts the html code for you, but actually knowing the codes is a lot more helpful even though it is a large pain. You know there are 3 views, HTML, Design, and HTML and design mode. I like using the HTML and design view because it has a little of both, so you can do 2 things. You can write the text on either the design or html mode, and to edit the font you can use the properties tool bar that add it. Or you can edit the text by using text altering html codes. Here are some of these html codes:
Replaced <> with () becuase blog thinks <> is real html.
Bold and Italic
(b) (/b) - Makes content or text bold
(i) (/i) - Makes content or text italic
Size and Color
(font size=+ with the size of font) (/font) - Changes size of the text and content
(font color=color in hexidecimal) (/font) - Changes color of content
Spaces
(p) (/p)- Acts like enter so moves down a line
Here is a website for reference in some of the html codes: http://www.webmonkey.com/webmonkey/reference/html_cheatsheet/

Group Project Marks
Today the teacher gave us a mark sheet so, we are supposed to evaluate the efficiency of our group. We were given 2 sheets to mark the group and to evaluate the group members. One sheet was to evaluate how efficient was your group. The first part of this sheets tells you to put checkmarks from 1-5 about the questions asked like how well did your group work to gether. The last 2 parts are talking about what made your group sucessful and what should the group do next time to do better. The second sheet was basically just a blank piece of lined paper, we are supposed to rate our group members from 1-10, and put comments on why you did you give this person the mark they got, and we are supposed to express our oppinion about if we should change our groups for the next project or not. In my oppinion no one should get a 0 if they atleast tried or put effort in to help, even very little it should atleast be a 1-2 not 0.

HexaDecimal
Today in class we talked about Hexadecimals. It is like binary but alot more complicated. It has many things in common with Binary but not all. They both use place values but Hexadecimal is base 16 which means it multiplys the previous column but 16. So it goes from 1, 16, 256, 4096 and it contiues to multiply by 16. Like binary to represent a number we place a digit under it, but since you go up by 16 it is imposible to just use 0 and 1 so you cna use any numbers and symbols t replace numbers. To get any number from 1-9 you put 1 in the 1 column to represent 1, 2 in the 1 columnt to represent 2, and so on. Since you cannot have 2 digits in a column how do you get 10 since the second column is when you get 16 you have to use a letter to replace these numbers becuase you do not need 16 to make a 10. In this case you use letters to replace it so:
A=10
B=11
C=12
D=13
E=14
F= 15
But you will stop at 15 becuase you need 1 16 to make a 16 so the hexadecimal will be 10 so:
16 1
1 0
will represent 16 and to make 17 you use the comboes, but the next column is 256 so you have to go through alot of combinations to get to 256 but for every column in HexaDecimal the letters equal the number so it states how much you multiply the number by, so A=10 so if there is a a on the 16 column and a 0 in the 1 column it would be 160.
The second thing we learned in class today is colour on computes. Computers only can read and understand code if we type in blue it will not not what is blue, we need to type a code to find out what is blue and we use hexadecimal. There are 256 levels of colour. In computer the primary colours are Red, Green, Blue (RGB, blue always come last, red always come first and green is always in the middle.) Each one of these colours has 256 levels, but it includes 0 which is a level, if we dont count it there will only be 255 of every level of coulour and we use Hexadecimal to represent coulour. Since it doesn't have 256 levels we will only need to use 2 columns the 1 and the 16 columns. So we use hexadecimal to reperesent what level is each coulour, so different combinations of different coulour levels for different colours. The format looks like this:
Red Green Blue
F F F F F F (White)
0 0 0 0 0 0 (Black)
9 9 9 9 9 9 (Gray)
This is a colour since F and F means 255 1 away from 256 this means that it is a fusion of red green blue all at the 255 level or max and this cuases White, if all the colours are at the 0 level it will be at nothing so it is black, and inbetween them both is gray which is half of all each light so 999999 is gray. For each coulour there are 2 places for the level in hexidecimal becuase the level of each colour will be in hexidecimal and it will only be in 2 spaces and since ther are 3 colours and 2 fore each there are 6 spaces for a coulour. The colours will stay this order no matter what. So if you want only pure blue it will be 0000FF that is the purest blue.
A=10
B=11
C=12
D=13
E=14
F= 15

The Last class before the Break
Today we were supposed to hand in our group projects, a lot of people left school already, but we were lucky we finished our powerpoint project, most of our group participated, exept for a few people. We had held 3 group meetings and we worked on the interactive power point at home. We had to do the parts of the groupmembers who didn't participate but we were able to finish. Today there were 5 people from our group in class, we were lucky that we had finished it earlier and we just had to edit a few things, and we were lucky that most of our group members were responsible so we were able to hand it in on time. After handing the project in we only had a the rest of the class for free time until the bell rang. I felt sad for some people because one of the groups had only 3-5 people becuase most of them left and not much people participated so they were not finished, also in one of the groups no one showed up so that was shocking even though they new the project was due today. Anyways off to the holidays. :)
HTML Codes and the Experiment with Dreamweaver MX
I didn't update my blog during the Christmas break because I was busy but here is the 2nd last class before the holidays:
Today our teacher taught us about HTML coding and the features in Dreamweaver MX. The teacher taught us in depth about the 3 types of views, the coding view where you only can see and insert codes, the coding and design view where there is a box to insert HTML codes and you can see what are the effects of these codes. We also learned about the design view where we can move things around. The teacher taught us some HTML Codes and he talks about how this program helps you with the html codes. You always start a html code with <> and you type and operation in them like . If you do this dream weaver will give you selections like changing the colour with html of text, you are required to type these things ontop of the text itself and put the ending barcket on where you want it to end. He mention the properties tool bar, with this you do not have to type in a html code to change the colour, font and any characteristics you just have to click on the characteristic changes you want and it applys the html coding for you. The teacher also taugh us how does a website works, when you type in a web adress it searches for a page called the index, if your main page is index it will find and you could work around with it, but if you are missing a page called the index even if you hyperlinked things it will show a layout of all the pages on the website. So you must make the main page called index and the rest can be called what ever you want, but you must save as each individual page as a file of its own. The final thing we learned was how to hyperlink text and picutres, to do so we just highlight the text or select the picture, that we click on the properties tool bar and you can see a bulseye button which says hyper to files, when you click it a arrow will fallow your curser and you will have to move it to the files tab in the doc, and then go to the file you want to link it to.
HTML- Stands for Hyper Text Makeup Language which is the what the computer sees, so if you see the image, it is basically an HTML code.
